I mentioned the recipient was local, so the florist around the corner was probably a good choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three hours later, she came back and said she had been looking and looking but just couldn\u2019t find the florist\u2019s number on the Internet.&nbsp;&nbsp;Since it was 1999, I asked, \u201cDid you look in the phone book?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Her response:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWhat\u2019s a phone book?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Me:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cSee that yellow book behind you?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Her:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cYes.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Me:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cOpen it. Go to the letter F.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Her:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cOh.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who may not remember, the Internet was still pretty new in 1999. Unless you were a big company with a big budget, you probably didn\u2019t have a website. Phone books ruled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, today, none of us has a phone book anymore. Technology always promises to make things easier, better, and faster. But sometimes\u2026 it doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Someone recently&nbsp;asked me if AI will make HR obsolete. My answer: \u201d No.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI promises faster this and smoother that. And it absolutely has its place. But people are still people. And interacting with people can\u2019t always be replaced by a machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to mention, AI is still new. All the answers just aren\u2019t there yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the fastest, most efficient solution is still the equivalent of grabbing the old phone book and flipping to the right page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Good HR professionals know how to use AI as a tool.&nbsp;But they also know when the situation calls for judgment, experience, and a real human conversation.
